ACTIVITIES OF THE FOUNDATION SINCE ITS INCEPTION National Conference on Tropical Bees and the Environment, December 19-21, 1996 , Bangalore The first three day national Conference on Tropical Bees and the environment was organized by Century Foundation under the auspices Dr V Sivaram , President, Dr Anita M, Secretary and Dr Shubha Rani .Treasurer was held in Bangalore from 19 th to 21 st December, 1996 . Attended by delegates from all over India , the Conference was inaugurated by Prof L R Verma, Vice Chancellor Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, HP, who felt that the use of Alternative technology to sustain and protect the environment was of great importance today. Inaugurating the Foundation, Prof N R Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University complemented the efforts of educated scientists to share their knowledge and make science a way of life in rural areas. He said that India has a big challenge before it and it can be overcome only through a strong scientific base. Delivering the Presidential Address, Prof. G K Veeresh, Vice Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore said Beekeeping is the only industry that is neither land used nor requiring permission or government sanctions and the effect of youngsters like in Century Foundation is probably the only way to achieve a growth in this industry. Training for Beekeepers in Malur , Kolar District to create awareness regarding the Role of bees in Pollination and modern Bee management practices to improve the production of Honey and Crop Pollination. Workshop conducted for Women to emphasize the importance of Beekeeping as a sustainable source of income to improve their Livelihood. A survey was conducted in B R Hills to study the status of Beekeeping and the role of Soligas, the Tribes of the Hills involved in Beekeeping.
